Outdoor Education
"Nature is
but a name for an effect, whose cause is God," wrote British
poet William Cowper some 200 years ago. Today, our students
experience the wonder of God's creation and the beauty of the
Alberta
landscape in Outdoor Education.
One of our
most popular curriculum options for Grades 6 through 12
students,
Outdoor Education helps build character through exploration of
the outdoors. The interest and skills acquired through Outdoor
Education last a lifetime.
In the
classroom we learn about “perceived” risk, but there is also a
“real” risk in the outdoors. Our Outdoor Education Program
seeks to diminish the risk factor by developing skills and
knowledge before we head out-of-doors. We choose our activities
and locations with care. We consider the age of the students,
the size of the class and the skill level of all students in the
class. We also avoid areas that have natural hazards.
Before any activity occurs, students receive classroom
preparation. Parents are given full details, such as location
and the nature of each activity and we welcome parent
involvement. We require two qualified adult chaperones on
every trip and more adults are recruited as necessary.
Our
progressive program means that the physical and mental
challenges are greater for older students. Our program includes
a variety of activities including biking, hiking, canoeing,
backpacking, snowshoeing, winter camping, rock climbing, survival
training and more.
Because the
program is in high demand, students are encouraged to sign up
early.
